Dental implant surfaces play major role in tissue attachment, warding off unwanted bacteria


The surface of implants, as well as other medical devices, plays a significant role in the adsorption of oral proteins and the colonization by unwanted microorganisms (a process known as biofouling), according to a new study. When dental implants are inserted, saliva or blood plasma immediately coat them. The implants adsorb a thin layer of proteins from these fluids that help gum tissue attach, but also allow microorganisms -- including potentially harmful bacteria -- to grow on the implant surface.

Helping practitioners with infection prevention and control: public consultation open


The Dental Board of Australia wants to make it easier for practitioners to know and understand their professional infection prevention and control obligations to help them practice safely. As part of this, the Board is reviewing its Guidelines on infection control. The Board is consulting on whether to provide information in the guidelines in a more accessible and helpful way through the use of other tools and resources, such as a one-stop fact sheet and a self-reflective tool.

New ACFF grants program aims for positive change on dental caries


The Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future is offering a total of $50,000 per year, supported by Colgate, to fund projects that will have positive impacts on dental caries experience in communities. The Committee will award grants ranging from $2,000 to $20,000 to selected projects each year, with a total of $50,000 annually across all projects.

Researchers identify oral bacteria as the major cause for periodontitis, a gum infection causing tooth loss


Periodontitis, a form of severe gum infection, can lead to tooth loss and is linked with other diseases. Management of periodontitis remains difficult, partly due to inadequate understanding of risk factors associated with the condition. In a recent study from Japan, researchers have emphasized the role of oral microbiome, over an individual's genetic makeup, in the development of the disease, providing clinicians a guide to designing strategies for diagnosing and treating periodontitis.
